New Delhi: Hours after the Election Commission announced the date for the Delhi Assembly Elections on Tuesday, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) fielded Shifa ur Rehma, an accused oof the Delhi riots, from the Okhla constituency. This comes after the party fielded Tahir Hussain, another accused of the Delhi riot, from the Mustafabad assembly constituency.
Shifa ur Rehman is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in the case. The authorities have also registered a case under UAPA against her. Notably, he was the President of Jamia Alumni. He had earlier played a n important role during the protests in the national capital over CAA/NRC. The CAA bill was later cleared in the Parliament.
Owaise announced the candidature of Tahir Hussain
Owaisi had announced the party’s decision to file Tahir Hussain on his X handle. He wrote, “MCD councilor Tahir Hussain has joined AIMIM. He will be our candidate from Mustafabad assembly constituency in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. His family members and supporters met me today and decided to join the party.”
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission announced the date for the Polls in Delhi. While polls will be held on February 5, results will be announced on February 8. All 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly will go on polls, with the Congress, BJP, and AAP contesting for the triangular fight in the capital. While both AAP and the Congress are part of the INDIA bloc, both partners are contesting against each other in Delhi.
By-elections on two seats
Apart from polls in Delhi, the Election Commission also announced the dates for by-elections for two seats. The byelections will be held on the Milkipur seat in Uttar Pradesh and Erode seat in Tamil Nadu on same date as Delhi elections. Their results will also be announced on February 8.
