Faridkot: Faridkot Police have invoked Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a murder case where jailed Khadoor Sahib MP and Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh is named as an accused. This is the first time that provisions of the UAPA have been added to a case involving Amritpal Singh.
Faridkot senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pragya Jain said that Special Investigation Team (SIT) has informed the court in writing about the inclusion of UAPA sections in the case. When asked about the specific sections, Jain said that she would need to consult the case file for more details.
Amritpal’s supporters to hold rally on January 14
This move comes at a time when Amritpal Singh’s supporters are planning a major political rally at the Maghi Mela in Sri Muktsar Sahib on January 14. The rally is expected to be a platform for announcing the formation of a political party.
A court hearing related to National Security Act (NSA), which was imposed on Amritpal Singh, is scheduled for January 15.
What’s the case?
The murder case involves the killing of Gurpreet Singh, a YouTuber who ran the channel “Hari Nau Talks,” in Faridkot on October 9, 2024. The police investigation revealed that, a month after the murder, Punjab Police arrested two operatives of Canada-based designated terrorist Arshdeep Singh Gill, alias Arsh Dalla, whom they identified as the mastermind behind the murder.
Police have claimed that Amritpal Singh was involved in the conspiracy, alleging that the murder was carried out at his direction. However, Amritpal Singh, currently held in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam under NSA, has denied the charges through his father, Tarsem Singh.
