New Delhi: Posters showing Devendra Fadnavis as the potential next chief minister of Maharashtra surfaced in Washim on Saturday, as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance cruised to a significant win in the state assembly bypolls.
As per to the EC data, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Fadnavis is ahead in Nagpur South West by a margin of 27,386 votes.
Fadnavis said: “The people in Maharashtra have given us (Mahayuti) an unprecedented win. This shows that people are with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In line with the slogan he gave ‘Ek hain toh safe hain’, people from all sections and communities voted for us…This is the victory of Mahayuti, CM Eknath Shinde, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Ramdas Athawale, this is the victory of unity.”
“There is no controversy over the post of chief minister; leaders of Mahayuti parties will decide about it,” he pointed out.
Fadnavis has been CM twice
In the past, the 54-year-old BJP leader has held the CM post twice.
Fadnavis is a noted Brahmin face of the BJP and was chosen by the BJP leadership to be state’s CM when the party showed its best ever performance in 2014, by bagging 122 seats. He was sworn in as chief minister for the second time on November 23, 2019, with Ajit Pawar taking the oath as deputy chief minister. But even before a Supreme Court-ordered no trust motion could take place, Fadnavis resigned on November 26, three days after taking oath as the chief minister.
