New Delhi: In a move to make airport facilities more affordable, authorities are setting up “Economy Zones” at airports across the country. These zones will offer affordable options for tea, water, and snacks, addressing the long-standing complaints about overpriced food at airports.
While these zones won’t have traditional restaurant seating, passengers will have access to tables similar to food courts in malls. Customers will be able to pick up their meals from counters and enjoy them at designated tables or take advantage of “On The Go” packaging options.
Pocket-friendly food and beverage options
The initiative follows extensive meetings led by the Civil Aviation Minister, who reached a consensus with relevant stakeholders to begin work on these zones. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), alongside various food outlet operators and new agencies, is now coordinating to develop and operate these zones.
Initially, these Economy Zones will be introduced at newly constructed airports, with future plans to identify and repurpose space at existing airports for similar affordable food and beverage options.
Currently, a simple snack like a samosa, which might typically cost Rs 10 outside, is priced around Rs 100 at many airports, putting basic refreshments out of reach for everyday travellers. Recognising this, the government is stepping in to ensure better, more affordable food services at airports.
Soon, passengers can look forward to pocket-friendly food and beverage options on their travels, thanks to this new initiative.
