Action against Ranjith only upon formal complaint: Saji Cheriyan on Sreelekha Mitra’s allegations

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cheriyan said on Saturday that the state government is prepared to take action against Malayalam director Ranjith if a formal complaint is filed following allegations made by Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra.

He said that while the government will not hesitate to act, no steps will be taken unless a proper complaint is registered.

Minister Cheriyan said that Ranjith has already denied the claims, and the state is not fully aware of the facts. He also mentioned that it would not be fair to punish an established filmmaker like Ranjith solely based on allegations.

Cheriyan said that there is no consideration of Ranjith stepping down from his position as Chairman of the Kerala State Film Academy at this point.

On Friday, actor Sreelekha Mitra accused Ranjith of making inappropriate advances towards her during discussions about a role in the Malayalam film Paleri Manikyam.

According to Mitra, Ranjith touched her arm, played with her bangles and stroked her hair. She further alleged that when Ranjith attempted to touch her neck, she decided to leave the room and eventually quit the project the following day. Although she confirmed that there was no sexual assault, she said his behavior made her uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, Ranjith said that Mitra had been called for an audition for Paleri Manikyam, not for a specific role. He said that her performance did not meet their expectations.

Ranjith also denied the allegations of inappropriate behaviour, saying that aside from offering her a cigarette, there were no other personal interactions. He expressed concern that the controversy might be driven by other motives and said that if legal proceedings arise, he will defend himself.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George urged Mitra to come forward and lodge a formal complaint, assuring that the state will provide full support. She added that anyone who is guilty of wrongdoing will not be protected by the government.
