Kanpur: Mohammad Mohsin Khan, serving as an assistant commissioner of police in Kanpur, has been transferred after a 26-year-old scholar at the IIT-Kanpur accused him of rape. A case has also been lodged against him and a special investigation team (SIT) formed to probe the allegations.
Mohammad Mohsin Khan, a 2013 batch Provincial Police Service officer, has been relieved of his duties in the Collectorganj circle and reassigned to the Director General of Police (DGP) headquarters in Lucknow, officials announced.
Khan was booked at the Kalyanpur police station on Thursday for allegedly seeking “sexual intercourse through deceitful means.” He has not yet been arrested, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankita Sharma stated.
SIR formed to probe rape charges against Kanpur ACP
The police have formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Additional DCP (Traffic) Archana Singh, to investigate the case, according to officials.
The SIT has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and to make sure the case is made based on facts and evidence, a police official said.
Mohammad Mohsin Khan promised to marry Kanpur IIT scholar
According to the police, the ACP enrolled at IIT-Kanpur five months ago to pursue a PhD in cybercrime and criminology. During his time at the institute, he reportedly formed a relationship with a research scholar, promising to marry her after divorcing his wife.
However, when the officer allegedly reneged on his promise, the woman filed a complaint of rape. DCP Ankita Sharma and Additional DCP Archana Singh visited the campus in plain clothes to meet the woman and verify her claims.
Prima facie the charges against Khan appear credible due to which he has been let off duty and transferred out of Kanpur to ensure a free and fair investigation of the allegations, police said.
IIT-Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal issued a statement regarding the case, saying, “A girl student of IIT-K has accused a police officer of sexual exploitation and filed a complaint. The institute is committed to providing all necessary support to the student during this difficult time.”
He further added, “We are grateful to the city police for their prompt action on the complaint and are cooperating fully with the investigation. We request everyone to respect the student’s privacy.”
