Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government’s plan to introduce Aavin’s Green Magic Plus milk has sparked outrage, with opposition leaders labeling it a “daylight robbery” due to its increased price and reduced quantity. The new variant, priced at Rs 25 for 450 ml, has the same 4.5% fat content and 9% Solids Not Fat (SNF) as the existing Green Magic milk, which costs Rs 44 per liter.
PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss criticized the move, stating that consumers will be forced to pay Rs 11 more per liter for the same quality milk, just with a different name and packaging. He argued that this tactic is similar to those used by private companies to minimize price increase visibility.
Aavin’s Green Magic Plus Milk: Opposition Demands Rollback of Price Hike
Aavin’s production costs are already high, with cow milk purchased at Rs 38 and buffalo milk at Rs 47 per liter. The company procures 36 lakh liters daily, with 26-27 lakh liters sold in sachets. This move is particularly concerning since Aavin faces a loss of Rs 4-5 per liter, while private brands charge Rs 54-58.
Ramadoss urged the government to abandon the plan, citing its negative impact on poor and needy people. DTV Dhinakaran also condemned the move, stating that Aavin’s management should not put additional burdens on vulnerable populations.
The controversy surrounding Green Magic Plus milk comes after the DMK government’s previous price hikes. In November 2022, the price of full-fat milk sold in orange wrappers increased by Rs 12 per liter. Last year, the government introduced Aavin Delight milk with a low fat content of 3.5% at the same price as an alternative to Aavin raw milk.
The opposition has demanded that the government continue selling the original Green Magic milk at Rs 44 per liter, rather than replacing it with the more expensive Green Magic Plus variant.
