New Delhi: The new Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is on the look out for his ‘missing’ ancestral home in Punjab’s Amritsar. The home was built by his grandfather Sarav Dayal before independence. Justice Khanna was sworn in as the new CJI on Monday.
Whenever Justice Khanna visits the city, he always visit Katra Sher Singh area where the supposed house was said built by his grandfather, a report in NDTV said quoting sources close to the CJI. Despite the change in structure of the area, the CJI continues to search for the house.
Who was Sarav Dayal
The Chief Justice’s grandfather Sarav Dayal was a prominent lawyer of his time. Dayal was also the part of Congress committee to probe Jallianwala Bagh massacre in April 1919.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna’s uncle HR Khanna served as the served as a Supreme Court judge and became popular after he wrote a dissenting note in the ADM Jabalpur case during 1975 Emergency.
Sarav Dayal’s two houses in Amritsar & Dalhousie
According to the report, Sarav Dayal bought two houses-one in Amritsar near Jallianwala Bagh and another in Himachal Pradesh’s Dalhousie. As part of the search, Justice Khanna is trying to locate the house in Katra Sher Singh.
During the unrest at the time of independence in 1947, the Amritsar house was vandalised by the rioters. However, the house was later restored by Justice Khanna’s grandfather.
