Chirang: At a time when most courts in India are working relentlessly to finish the case backlog, a court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Assam achieved the rare feat of disposing of all pending cases by the end of December last year.
The CJM court in Chirang, which heard a total of 830 cases in the year, disposed of all pending cases by the end of the year. All clearings were related to criminal cases. Notably, there were no pending cases by the end of December.
A big achievement in Assam: Public Prosecutor
Speaking to TV9 Network, Nandita Basumatari, Public Prosecutor, Chirang District Court, said, “This a big achievement in Assam. Never before has any CJM court achieved such a feat in the state. While there were 143 cases at the beginning of the year, a total of 687 cases were added subsequently. A total of 830 cases were disposed of during the year. There were no pending cases as of December 31 in the CJM court.”
The district court was closed on January 1 on the occasion of the New Year. While the completion of all cases in Chirang CJM court may not be the first time in India, it certainly is a remarkable feat considering the number of pending cases across the judiciary system in the country. The court has certainly set a precedent in the country.
