New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a central figure in global diplomacy, impacting regional and international conflicts through a range of strategic policies and interventions. His tenure has seen India play a vital role in fostering peace and resolving disputes, underscoring Modi’s reputation as a peacemaker on the world stage.
As the country celebrates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 74th birthday, let’s have a look at how PM Modi has played a crucial role in curtailing global conflicts:
Neighbourhood First Policy
The Neighbourhood First Policy, an initiative introduced by Prime Minister Modi, aimed to strengthen India’s relationships with its neighbouring countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The policy focused on resolving longstanding issues and enhancing connectivity—be it physical, digital, or interpersonal.
It has played a crucial role in bolstering trade and economic cooperation, while also countering Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean region. By prioritising this policy, India has sought to improve maritime security, address energy needs, and bridge developmental gaps, especially in the northeastern states.
Doklam standoff resolution
One of PM Modi’s significant diplomatic achievements was the resolution of the Doklam standoff with China. The standoff, which began in June 2017, involved escalating tensions over a disputed plateau. The breakthrough came during an informal BRICS meeting in Hamburg on July 7, 2017.
PM Modi’s proactive engagement with Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the adverse effects of the standoff on both nations and advocated for a peaceful resolution.
This direct intervention was pivotal in de-escalating the situation. At the subsequent bilateral meeting in Xiamen on September 5, 2017, both leaders agreed on the importance of avoiding future disputes.
The standoff was resolved by August 28, 2017, with troops from both sides positioned more than 200 metres apart.
UAE-Israel peace deal: PM Modi’s influence in the Middle East
PM Modi played a key role in facilitating the Abraham Accords, the 2020 peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel. This historic accord marked a significant step in normalising relations between the two nations.
PM Modi’s involvement extended to addressing the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict. In a crucial dialogue with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed, PM Modi expressed concerns over the violence and civilian casualties in Gaza and emphasised the need for a durable resolution to the conflict.
Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad): Strengthening alliances
PM Modi has played a key role in enhancing the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), an alliance comprising India, the United States, Japan and Australia. The first in-person Quad summit on September 24, 2021, marked a significant milestone for the group. PM Modi used the summit to advocate for peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
The discussions addressed a wide range of issues, including maritime security, trade, climate change, and counterterrorism. The Quad’s focus on countering China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region was evident.
SAARC and BIMSTEC
India’s involvement in regional organisations like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has been pivotal in promoting regional cooperation. PM Modi has actively engaged with regional organizations like SAARC and BIMSTEC to promote economic cooperation, connectivity, and people-to-people ties.
SAARC, established in 1985, aims to foster regional collaboration in trade, investment, and cultural exchange. India has been a key player, hosting its first summit and contributing significantly to its budget. However, SAARC has faced challenges, including strained relations with Pakistan and Nepal’s concerns over India’s dominance.
BIMSTEC, founded in 1997, focuses on economic cooperation and integration among member states. India has been a driving force behind BIMSTEC, advocating for increased connectivity and cooperation. Initiatives such as the BIMSTEC Coastal Shipping Agreement and the Motor Vehicle Agreement highlight India’s commitment to regional integration.
Act East Policy: Enhancing ties with Asia-Pacific
PM Modi’s Act East Policy aims to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries, promoting economic cooperation, strategic partnerships and people-to-people connections.
The Act East Policy, introduced in 2014, represents a strategic shift from the Look East Policy, broadening engagement with the Asia-Pacific region. Key objectives include strengthening economic ties, enhancing strategic partnerships, and promoting cultural connections.
Significant projects under this policy include the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan Multi-modal Transit Transport Project. These initiatives aim to counterbalance China’s influence, bolster regional security, and support the development of India’s Northeastern states.
BRICS and G20
India’s robust economic growth and engagement in global forums like BRICS and the G20 further illustrate its strategic global role. PM Modi has effectively utilised multilateral forums like G20 and BRICS to promote global economic cooperation, trade, and investment.
India’s economy grew by 7.2% in the 2022-23 fiscal year, positioning it as the fifth-largest economy globally. India’s involvement in BRICS enhances its global standing and fosters economic ties with member nations.
India’s participation in the G20 allowed it to advocate for its economic interests and influence global policy.
