Patna: Severe weather conditions in Bihar claimed 82 lives so far due to thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning. The highest number of deaths were reported from Nawada and Nalanda districts. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed officials to provide an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the families of each deceased.
The storm has also damaged crops in several areas, adding to the troubles of farmers. After the heavy rainfall, waterlogging was reported in many parts of Patna, where the city recorded 42.6 mm of rain till 5.30 pm.
Orange alert issued for several districts
India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for several districts including Darbhanga, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada and Patna. The alert indicates the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds ranging between 40 to 50 kmph in these areas, especially on Friday and Saturday.
The spell of bad weather also led to widespread crop damage, particularly affecting the farming community. Heavy rains caused waterlogging in several parts of Patna, creating traffic disruptions and difficulties for residents.
Officials on high alert
Though the rainfall caused temporary flooding in many areas, officials from Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the district administration claimed that rainwater was cleared in record time, thanks to quick action by emergency teams and drainage workers.
Earlier on Wednesday, 13 people lost their lives due to lightning strikes across different districts. With the orange alert still in place, the administration urged people to stay indoors during bad weather, avoid sheltering under trees, and follow all safety advisories issued by the weather department. Disaster response teams have been deployed and are on high alert to handle emergencies.
