Jaunpur: At least Eight people were killed and 24 others injured in two separate accidents involving a Tata Sumo SUV and a passenger bus ferrying devotees from Varanasi to Ayodhya under the Badlapur police station area of Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Police have taken custody of the bodies and are conducting necessary investigations. The Tata Sumo passengers were from Jharkhand, while the bus passengers were devotees from Delhi. Both groups were travelling from Varanasi to Ayodhya after visiting temples.
The accident took place in the Badlapur police station area on National Highway 731 near Sarokhanpur. Devotees from Jharkhand were travelling in a Tata Sumo after visiting Varanasi when their vehicle was hit by another vehicle, killing five people and injuring six others.
Shortly after this accident, another collision occurred at the same location. A double-decker bus carrying passengers from Delhi crashed into a stationary truck on the side of the highway. The crash resulted in the deaths of three people, including the bus driver, while more than two dozen passengers sustained injuries.
The bus was carrying devotees from Delhi who were on a pilgrimage, travelling from Chitrakoot to Prayagraj, then Varanasi, and finally to Ayodhya.
So far, authorities have confirmed the deaths of eight people in both accidents. All the injured were taken to Badlapur CHC with the help of police and local residents. After initial treatment, they were referred to the district hospital for further medical care.
SP visits district hospital
Following the accident, Jaunpur SP Kaustubh visited the district hospital to check on the injured and assured them of the best possible medical care. He stated that multiple people were injured in two separate accidents last night. In the first incident, an unidentified vehicle collided with a Tata Sumo, killing five passengers.
In the second incident, a bus carrying passengers from Delhi crashed into a stationary truck, resulting in three more fatalities, including the driver, he said.
The police have taken custody of the bodies and are carrying out necessary legal procedures, while treatment for the injured continues at the hospital.
