Noida: In a disturbing case of medical negligence, a seven-year-old boy underwent surgery on the wrong eye at Anand Spectrum Hospital in Greater Noida’s Sector Gamma 1. The incident took place on November 12.
The boy named Yudhisthir was taken to the hospital by his parents after they noticed frequent watering and discomfort in his left eye. According to the boy’s father, Nitin Bhati, the attending doctor, Anand Verma, diagnosed the issue and informed the family that there was a foreign object in the left eye. He suggested surgery as the best option to remove it, estimating the cost at Rs 45,000.
Surgery on wrong eye
On Tuesday, the surgery was performed. However, upon returning home, Yudhisthir’s mother noticed that the operation had been done on the right eye instead of the left one, which was the affected eye. Shocked by the mistake, the family immediately returned to the hospital to confront Dr Verma and the staff.
“The doctor told us that the surgery was successful and claimed that a small metal-like object had been removed from the eye,” Yudhisthir’s father said. He added that the doctor even showed them a photo of the removed object on a mobile phone. However, the family soon realised the error when they saw that the wrong eye had been operated on.
When the family questioned Dr Verma and the hospital staff about the mistake, they were met with rude behaviour. “The doctor and his staff misbehaved with us when we asked for an explanation,” theYudishthir’s father said. This led to a heated argument and the family decided to file a formal complaint.
Incident reported to Gautam Buddha Nagar CMO
The incident was reported to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Gautam Buddha Nagar. The police confirmed receiving the complaint and stated that the boy’s family is demanding strict action against the doctor, including revoking his medical licence and sealing the hospital.
Local authorities have assured the family that a full investigation will be conducted. “We are looking into the matter, and an appropriate course of action will be taken after a thorough probe,” the police said.
