New Delhi: A 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook Assam’s Morigaon district early Thursday morning, with tremors also felt in Guwahati and other regions across the state. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 2:25 am and had a depth of 16 kilometers.
“EQ of M: 5.0, On: 27/02/2025 02:25:40 IST, Lat: 26.28 N, Long: 92.24 E, Depth: 16 Km, Location: Morigaon, Assam,” the NCS said on X.
Earthquakes are quite frequent in Assam, as the state lies in one of India’s most earthquake-prone areas. Assam is located in Seismic Zone V, indicating a high risk of strong tremors.
The region has seen some huge earthquakes, like the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (8.6 magnitude) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (8.1 magnitude) — which are considered the most massive ones.
