New Delhi: A 25-year-old kanwariya, who died in a road accident near Roorkee, has given a new lease of life to five people after his organs were donated, a Times of India report said.
Sachin Khandelwal, who hailed from Mahendragarh in Haryana, was hit by a car on July 22 while he was on his way to Haridwar to fetch Ganga water. He was rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh. Doctors found that the young man had gone into coma. Sachin breathed his last after some time.
Sachin’s family members took the noble decision of donating his organs after some doctors approached them. The Dehradun police speeded up the transportation of the organs by creating a green corridor from AIIMS Rishikesh to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport on Thursday.
Sachin’s kidneys, pancreas, and liver were sent for transplantation to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in Delhi. Sachin’s corneas helped two patients in Uttarakhand get their sight back on Saturday.
Sachin’s younger brother Pankaj Khandelwal, who works in Gurugram, told The Times of India said it is believed that one should complete at least two kanwar yatras in one’s life. “We two went for our first yatra when we were very young,” Pankaj said.
This was the first time a cadaveric organ donation procedure was undertaken at AIIMS Rishikesh. Professor Dr Meenu Singh, executive director of AIIMS Rishikesh, reportedly told TOI, “We not only achieved a milestone in advanced medical technology but also demonstrated remarkable capability in saving lives with administrative support..”
