New Delhi: Two Indian Navy women officers, Lieutenant Commanders Roopa A and Dilna K, are set to make history as they embark on an eight-month voyage of the globe, starting from Goa on Wednesday. This expedition will see them navigate over 21,600 nautical miles (approximately 40,000 km) of treacherous waters, relying solely on wind power.
The duo, seasoned sailors with prior experience in trans-oceanic expeditions, will be sailing aboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini, an indigenously built 56-foot sailing vessel. The voyage, dubbed Navika Sagar Parikrama II, will see them conquer some of the world’s most challenging waters, including the notorious three capes – Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope.
“We are fully prepared for the voyage,” the two woman officers told reporters last week.
This historic voyage marks a significant milestone for the Indian Navy and underlines the country’s commitment to maritime prowess and exploration, Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan said.
The expedition is a testament to the courage, resilience, and perseverance of these women officers, who will push the limits of human endurance in their quest to conquer the vast oceans.
Navika Sagar Parikrama II is a testament to the “Make in India” initiative, with the INSV Tarini showcasing India’s technological prowess on the international stage, Vice Admiral Swaminathan said. The voyage is also a tribute to the pioneering spirit of the Indian Navy, echoing the legacy of the first all-women circumnavigation of the globe, Navika Sagar Parikrama, completed in 2017.
This time, the expedition will be even more challenging, as the officers will be undertaking the circumnavigation in double-handed mode, a feat never before achieved by an Indian crew, the Navy said.
The two officers, both hailing from military families, have shown unwavering dedication and skill throughout their careers. Lt Commander Roopa A, a native of Pondicherry, and Lt Commander Dilna K, from Calicut, have honed their expertise through rigorous training and previous trans-oceanic expeditions, preparing them for the big expedition.
