Surat: The abundance of fake goods is increasing in Gujarat. After fake garam masala, fake Eno, fake cumin, and fake salt, now fake garlic has been seized.
Chinese garlic was found at Surat Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). Authorities seized 2,150 kg of Chinese garlic at Surat APMC, valued at nearly Rs 10 lakh.
Chinese garlic banned in India
The sale of Chinese garlic has been banned in India since 2014 due to its harmful chemical content.
The Surat APMC destroyed the entire stock of 2,150 kg of Chinese garlic. Additionally, an investigation has been launched to determine how the garlic was transported and distributed.
Police are intensifying their efforts to track down those responsible for smuggling the banned product.
Health risks of Chinese garlic
Chinese garlic is known to contain harmful substances such as metals, lead, and chlorine, which are used during cultivation. This type of garlic, characterized by its white appearance and large cloves, is easy to peel but poses significant health risks.
Consuming it can increase the likelihood of severe diseases, including nervous system disorders and cancer.
How to identify real, fake garlic
To avoid buying fake Chinese garlic, consider these tips:
- Appearance: Avoid garlic that looks unnaturally white and has thick cloves.
- Domestic garlic traits: Desi garlic typically has smaller cloves with visible blemishes and bumps, and its skin is not completely white.
- Bottom stain: If you turn over the garlic and find a stain at the bottom, it is likely domestic garlic.
- Check for pure whiteness: If the garlic remains completely white after inspection, it might be fake Chinese garlic.
