Lucknow: The NIA court has sentenced to life all 28 accused in connection with the murder of Chandan Gupta as he was taking part in Tiranga rally in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh in 2018. On Thursday, Special NIA court has convicted all the accused for the murder. Chandan was shot dead during the rally.
Prime accused Saleem and six others have also been sentenced in Arms Act case. All the accused were sentenced via video conferencing as the accused could not be brought to court due to vehicle issue. The accused had surrendered before the court on Thursday.
Two accused acquitted by court
Two other accused have been acquitted by the court for giving them benefit of doubt. The accused have been convicted under various sections including vandalism, illegal gathering, attempt to murder, treason, insult to flag among others of IPC.
Those who have been sentenced to life include Saleem, Zahid, Asif, Aslam, Akram, Shavab, Tausif, Mohsin.
What happened on Tiranga Yatra day?
According to a complaint filed by Chandan’s father, the Tiranga rally went through Tehsil Road and reached Rajkiye Balika College. The complaint alleged some people, who were armed, snatched tricolour and stopped the yatra. When Chandan and other protested, stone pelting and firing erupted.
It is alleged that one Saleem shot at Chandan, who was first taken to Kasganj police station by his brother Vivek and then to district hospital. The doctors declared Chandan dead during treatment.
