New Delhi: A 12-year-old student enrolled at a Vasant Vihar school was apprehended for sending a hoax bomb threat email to his own institution, one of approximately 30 schools targeted on Friday.
The boy’s confession revealed a disturbing trend, he acted after seeing media reports about bomb threats to other Delhi schools. Believing that he would evade detection due to the lack of arrests in previous cases, he replicated the crime.
This incident is not an isolated event. At least 44 schools received similar threats on Monday and another threat targeted a Delhi school on Saturday, making the week’s third instance of widespread bomb threats targeting schools in the national capital.
A massive search operation across 30 schools on Friday yielded no suspicious items but caused a significant disruption in the schools. These threats demonstrate the lack of tangible evidence for investigators to work with.
Despite registering a case of criminal intimidation and conspiracy, the Delhi Police Special Cell has yet to identify the perpetrators behind the ongoing series of bomb threats. The investigation’s lack of progress is particularly troubling given that a similar wave of threats impacting over 250 schools, hospitals and other institutions in May remains unsolved, leaving schools and the public vulnerable.
According to the Special Cell, this child has nothing to do with the bomb threat group coming in the mail in many schools in Delhi. The boy received counselling and his parents a warning
