Prayagraj: A tragic road accident took place on Prayagraj-Mirzapur highway in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the death of 10 devotees and leaving 19 others injured. The accident took place under the Meja police station area around 2 am on Friday night when a Bolero car collided head-on with a bus.
The Bolero was carrying devotees from Korba district in Chhattisgarh, heading to Prayagraj to attend the Maha Kumbh Mela and take a holy dip at the Sangam. The bus involved in the accident was carrying passengers from Rajgarh district in Madhya Pradesh and was returning from the Maha Kumbh to Varanasi.
Car completely shattered in accident
According to police reports, the collision was so severe that the Bolero was completely shattered. All ten people traveling in the car lost their lives at the spot. The police had to use a JCB machine to extract the victims from the damaged vehicle.
The bus, which had 19 passengers, sustained significant damage as well. Those injured were rushed to the Community Health Center in Ramnagar for medical treatment.
What eyewitnesses said
DCP Yamunanagar, Vivek Chandra Yadav, said that the bodies of the deceased were sent to Swaroop Rani Medical Hospital for post-mortem examination. He added that the investigation into the incident is underway.
Eyewitnesses said that the impact of the collision created a loud sound, and there was immediate chaos at the accident site. Upon receiving information, police team arrived at the spot.
50 crore devotees take holy dip at Sangam
Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj attracted over 50 crore devotees who have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, setting a new world record. This is the largest gathering ever recorded for any religious, cultural, or social event in history. Devotees from across India and around the world came together, showing a strong bond of faith and unity.
On Mauni Amavasya, 8 crore devotees took a holy dip. Similarly, 3.5 crore devotees participated on Makar Sankranti. On January 30th and February 1st, 2 crore devotees each took a holy dip in the Sangam. Additionally, 1.7 crore devotees participated on Paush Purnima, while 2.57 crore took a holy dip on Basant Panchami. More than 2 crore devotees also took a holy dip on Maghi Purnima.
