Mahalaya Amavasya 2024 Date and Time
In West Bengal, Mahalaya Amavasya marks the beginning of Navratri festivity. It is believed that Goddess Durga descended on the Earth on this day. The Amavasya Tithi begins at 09:39 PM on October 1 and ends at 12:18 AM on October 03. Pitru Paksha is a 15-day period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors, especially through food offerings.
Mahalaya signifies the last day of Pitru Paksha and serves as an opportunity for Hindus to conduct Shradh for deceased family members. As per religious beliefs, Mahalaya is the day when the deceased family members who became Pitru, go back to their Pitru Loka.
