Chennai: In a bid to transform its waste management system, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has introduced an AI-powered garbage monitoring system, utilizing advanced technology to tackle the city’s waste woes.

These smart cameras will send real-time alerts to the command control center at Ripon Building, allowing authorities to swiftly monitor violations and impose penalties. So far, the corporation has collected Rs 17.96 lakh in spot fines for dumping, according to a recent update from the commissioner on X.

The innovative system, designed to optimize waste collection and reduce operational costs, employs ultrasonic sensors to track waste fill levels in bins and containers. Data is transmitted through various IoT networks, including Sigfox, NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, and GPRS, enabling real-time monitoring.

Citizens can access information on bin locations and fill levels through a dedicated mobile app, allowing them to report issues and request pickups. The system also facilitates dynamic collection scheduling, reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact.

To further strengthen waste management, the Chennai Corporation has tightened sanitation-related rules, imposing fines on those who dump and burn illegal garbage. A digital spot fine system has been implemented, with 468 Point of Sale (POS) devices received from Indian Overseas Bank.

Of these, 70 devices have already been deployed, collecting Rs 5 lakh in fines. The system will be intensified in the coming days, with zone-wise committees appointed to monitor the initiative. Corporation Safety and Sanitation Inspectors, Zonal Officers, Administrative and Assistant Executive Engineers, and Ward Assistant Engineers will utilize these devices to monitor and catch rule violators in 15 mandals across Chennai. Fifteen flying force vehicles have been deployed for this purpose.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner Kumaraguruparan stated that the new initiative has already yielded promising results, with Rs 17.96 lakh collected in fines from violators. The corporation aims to increase revenue through this system, ensuring transparency and efficiency.

Payment options for fines include UPI, debit/credit cards, demand drafts, and cheques, with funds directly deposited into the corporation’s account, eliminating opportunities for corruption.
