Air quality deteriorates in Mumbai, residents irked over BMC’s social media response

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is under fire for its response to the city’s escalating air pollution crisis. Instead of implementing effective measures to combat the rising smog levels, the BMC has faced public backlash after posting a simple definition of smog on social media, a move many see as insufficient amidst growing health concerns.

The situation took a turn for the worse when Mumbai Nowcast, a meteorological service, issued a stark warning on Thursday, comparing the city’s air quality to that of a “gas chamber.” This alarming comparison has ignited fear among residents, prompting calls for immediate action.

Meanwhile, as per the BMC’s clarification, as winter approaches and temperatures drop, a phenomenon known as “thermal inversion” is intensifying the pollution problem. Dew forming in the air allows dust and particles from vehicles, industries, and construction sites to settle. The cooler air near the ground gets trapped, leading to a thick, fog-like haze that hampers visibility and prevents sunlight from breaking through.

Further compounding the issue, a slowdown in the sea breeze has resulted in more frequent occurrences of smog during the winter months. Health experts are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, especially cardiovascular exercises, due to the dangerous air quality. Mumbai Nowcast has also recommended that individuals with respiratory issues, such as asthma, wear masks when going outside.

Social media irked with BMC’s response

As the health risks associated with the deteriorating air quality become increasingly clear, the BMC’s response—a basic advisory merely defining smog—has left many feeling frustrated and concerned about the lack of proactive measures to address this environmental emergency. Residents are calling for more substantial actions to protect public health and improve air quality in Mumbai.
